Importance of Education

Vedic education holds immense significance in today's era despite advancing technologies and the changes brought about by the modern education system. The ancient teachings of the Vedas have a strong impact on the different aspects of modern life. It offers timeless principles that can guide individuals in leading a balanced, purposeful, and harmonious life. The principles of dharma (righteousness) and karma (action) guide individuals to lead a life that is not only morally upright but also contributes positively to the welfare of the community. The priceless foundation provided by Vedic education contains the potential to become a guiding light for individuals to make morally correct decisions.

Education during the Vedic period encourages the development of positive subconscious thoughts of students. The ancient texts like the Brahmanas, the Upanishads and the Dharmasutras, uplift the mental state of students, helping them enhance critical thinking skills. Reading these texts provide access to a whole new realm of ideas, which brings a welcome change in individual life. The Brahmanas are the secondary layer of Sanskrit text embedded in each Veda. They also present scientific knowledge of Vedic period, including astrophysics and philosophical treatises.

The Upanishads are widely known, and the most recent addition to the Vedas, which deals with meditation, philosophy, consciousness and ontological knowledge. The central concern of all Upanishads is to discover a relation between rituals, cosmic realities and the human body. The Dharmasutras are the guidebooks of Dharma, which discusses law and guidelines for individual social behaviour and ethical norms. We have heard about learned sages like Aryabhatta, Panini, Katyayana and Patanjali. Their writings- Charaka and Sushruta- are some medical monographs which are also a source of learning.

The purpose of the Vedic education system is to validate discipline in the current education system. Discipline is a major aspect of learning and education during the Vedic period carries academic values which play an important role in today’s education. Nowadays, we often see a lack of academic values and discipline in students. They do not value time, which in itself is a huge loss for today’s generation. Students should know about the culture and heritage of India. They should be aware of the importance of discipline and fruitful management of time. Vedic education will inculcate within the present generation moral and spiritual values. The aim of Vedic teaching is the development of character and moral feeling. It enables one to become a functional member of society. It promotes harmonious growth. It also fosters personal happiness, along with a sense of social responsibility.

Schools should bring more opportunities and challenges in order to get students involved into the Vedic education. They should narrate puranic tales and the morals taught by them. There should be at least one book in school curriculum which accommodates puranic stories and hymns. In today’s era, it is easier to provide quality education due to the presence of several pedagogies. Balancing innovation and tradition is the key of today’s learning. The puranas offer a modulating understanding of virtues, vices, and the consequences of one’s actions. By exploring these narratives, students can develop a strong moral compass and ethical decision-making skills. Students would experience holistic development. They would learn compassion, virtue, empathy, and affection. Vedic teachings portray the five elements (panch tatvas) of life, which comprise of Aakash, Vayu, Agni, Jal, and Prithvi.

Aakash tatva is the space that exists beyond the stationary and moving elements of the universe. This space can be occupied by proton-like elements while allowing some neutrons to revolve in it. It teaches one to gain values.

Vayu Tatva represents the driving force for most of the elements existing in this cosmos. It teaches us to be free-spirited, light-hearted, and egoless.

Agni Tatva represents the energy that can be transformed into other types of energy. It teaches how to exercise and control power while balancing creation and destruction. Power should be used to help others.

Jal Tatva grants the force necessary to attract different parts of an element and keep them together. It teaches adaptability, how to be gentle and flexible.

Prithvi Tatva provides the matrix to an element. It teaches stability and self-confidence.

The panch Tatva teach the overall values which help us to be a better human being.

Vedic education has an intense focus on spirituality. In this materialistic world, the Vedic approach reminds individuals of the importance of inner fulfilment. Meditation, mindfulness, and self-reflection are integral parts of Vedic education, contributing to mental well-being and emotional resilience. Yogic practices, for instance, not only enhance physical health but also contribute to mental and spiritual growth. The way Vedic education provides a perspective at everything as a whole is important for keeping life balanced and healthy.
